James and I thought we’d start our first Sunday Salud entry out with a bang.  We’ve been holding on to this bottle of wine for about 5 months now, waiting for the perfect time to enjoy it.  Alas, Sunday Salud was born and we finally get to uncork it all-the-while raising our glasses to our mothers, back in Alabama!

Name: Frei Brothers Reserve Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

Region: Northern Sonoma, CA

Grape Varietal: Pinot Noir

Vintage: 2007

Price: $19.99

Alcohol Content: 13.8%

Food Pairing: Rosemary and Balsamic Porkchop with a Blueberry Demi, Red Pepper and Nueske Bacon Grits and sauteed Brocolini.  Dessert: Pot de Creme

Color & Appearance: Translucent crimson

Nose/Aroma: Peppery-oak, definitely smells like California

Mouth/Flavors: Overall soft, blackberry in front, tart cherry and apple crisp on the end

Conclusions/Impressions: Well-rounded and smooth.  We agreed that this is our new favorite Pinot Noir, definitely the best we’ve tasted in a while.

Rating: (score from 1-10) 9+

Overall, we loved this bottle!  And I can’t lie…I definitely enjoyed the food, too!
